I'm a friendly face who understands the student's point of view - I recently completed secondary school myself, and had to develop revision strategies and employed various ways of understanding the content to achieve top marks. This also means I have up-to-date knowledge of how exams work and the realities of school life.
I've tutored a variety of students who all worked in different ways - I'm great at adapting to their strengths and can quickly take different approaches when a concept just won't stick. I find vibrant explanations and asking students lots of questions to constantly gauge their knowledge is the best way to help them learn and fill in any gaps they may have, over mindless memorisation. I strike a good balance between practical work and discussions, where I ask the student to demonstrate their understanding of the topic or apply it in ways they may not expect. This technique echoes the 'tutorial' style I currently partake in at Oxford University, which is shown to improve communication and knowledge in leaps and bounds.
Exam skills and revision techniques come later, at more critical points such as before mocks or tests. Rather than giving general revision tips, I help the student understand how they themselves can work best, in terms of prioritising content or staying productive during tough exam periods. This means that outside of tutoring hours, the student can work efficiently on their own, honing time management and planning skills, which are relevant for future life as well.
