I have been teaching international students for almost a year now in online mode. My experience of teaching international students has been pleasant and quite eye-opening to many of the gaps I could identify in our competitive way of assessment among kids. I believe each child is unique in one way or another. Teachers have to get out of their traditional comfort zone of teaching to empathize with students' experiences of learning. After familial support, it is the teachers' love, compassion and intellectual nourishment that children seek in their school-going years, especially for those coming from challenging backgrounds. I believe in the democratic way of teaching where students must have their say so that no one is left behind, as I experienced during my school education.
Since I teach in online mode, I understand I have to keep the students actively engaged throughout the lesson by constantly interacting and listening to their views. I use Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, editable online worksheets and self-made worksheets (according to the needs of the students). Video lessons are shown to keep them creatively involved in the process. The content of my lesson plan is fully updated and in compliance with the requirements of their respective education system. I want to contribute towards the nourishment of students’ intellectual and social skills by providing them with a safe and inclusive space within those limited resources as well.
I try to provide a rewarding opportunity to channel the positive energies of young and creative students in a healthy direction. I take it as a fruitful learning opportunity which will help me employ the organizational skills that I have acquired over the years through extracurricular activities including volunteer work and internships. My cross-cultural teaching experience with international students has yielded sufficient adaptability and interpersonal skills to accommodate people with different needs and skills.
