Each lesson is tailored to the specific needs of the student. Some students will learn best by working through exam questions with guidance, while others may prefer to be taught the content and given the opportunity to attempt questions at home, receiving feedback in the next lesson. Whatever the method preferred by the student, I aim to build student confidence in the key scientific principles required to succeed. In addition, I provide weekly feedback to the parent and student, outlining key goals and the progress made.

I pride myself on being approachable and patient, providing students with the sounding board that they don't have access to in school. This not only builds an environment where no question is held back, but also helps to build the confidence of the student to try new things and puzzle through complex problems.

Biology is often treated as a science where memorisation is key to success, but for many students, including myself, this approach is only damaging. I believe that a robust understanding of the principles of biology, and a focus on reasoning over memorisation, is a much more effective teaching method. Even at GCSE, and again at A-level, the teaching of biology should not be based on memorisation but instead on deep comprehension and application.
