I’m Gemma, and in my primary classroom—spanning history, literacy, and maths—I create vivid, hands-on lessons that bring learning to life while ensuring each task is small, clear, and confidence-building. Picture this: we begin with a story or fun scenario that ignites curiosity—like imagining Roman soldiers at Hadrian’s Wall, following a character baking cookies needing division, or discovering a hidden artifact in a tale—and then move into shared exploration, such as examining materials, reading together, or exploring a real-world maths problem. I think aloud and model each step, showing how to organize ideas or solve a problem, then guide students through the work in chunks, using helpful visuals, sentence starters, manipulatives, or word banks to make abstract ideas tangible (like the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach in maths). Whether unlocking literacy through storytelling—which builds vocabulary, comprehension, and creative thinking —or weaving narrative into maths lessons through picture books to place problems in meaningful contexts and boost engagement and independence, lessons are scaffolded so they feel manageable and purposeful. All of this takes place in a fun, supportive, and inclusive environment where every child is empowered to explore, ask questions, and grow.
