I firmly believe in student-centred and student-led teaching. What I mean by this is that I want to meet my students where they're at, so that I can adapt my approach and allow the student to get the most out of their session. This means that I encourage questions and challenges, and I ask you to tell me what does and doesn't work for you so that you can learn more effectively.
I offer a free first session, so that we can get to know eachother. In this session, we will go over the specific areas you want to work on - whether this is understanding texts, learning about context, developing analytical skills, or improving academic writing. I will also ask what kind of approaches do or do not typically work for you. If you choose to continue with tutoring, the conversation we have in the first session will allow me to go forward and make personalised lesson plans that are tailored to your specific needs.
I have a long history of tutoring in an informal setting, mostly for family, friends, and classmates at school. I developed these skills in a more formal setting during the third year of my undergraduate degree, when I joined the departmental 'family' system to help incoming students develop their academic skills. Currently, I am working as a postgraduate teaching assistant at the University of Exeter, having completed the Learning and Teaching in Higher Education course.
