My lessons focus on making geography click, not just memorising it. For a new topic or new student, I start by finding out what they already know and where the actual gaps are, rather than assuming a fixed starting point — there's no point re-explaining something a student has already got a solid grip on, and no point rushing past something that hasn't landed yet.

From there, I introduce the concept using maps, data, and real case studies rather than working straight through a textbook page by page. I draw on things I've worked with directly — GIS mapping software, and fieldwork I've carried out on wildfire risk, river systems, and glacial landscapes — to show how geography is actually used in practice, not just studied in theory. I find this makes abstract ideas feel a lot more concrete, especially for topics that can otherwise feel quite dry on paper.

Rather than lecturing, I ask questions throughout the lesson to check real understanding as we go, and I adjust pace and approach depending on how a topic is landing — spending longer on something that isn't quite clicking, and moving faster through material a student already grasps well. Students then work through examples or questions themselves, ideally ones that connect back to something they already find interesting, since geography touches on so much — climate, cities, ecosystems, economics, human migration — that there's usually a natural hook to build from.

I finish each session by recapping the core idea in simple terms, making sure the underlying concept has actually stuck rather than just been covered and forgotten. I don't come from a background of years of formal tutoring experience, but I bring genuine enthusiasm for the subject, real patience, and a structured, evidence-based approach to every lesson. My goal isn't for a student to leave able to repeat facts back on command — it's for them to genuinely understand the underlying idea, so it holds up well beyond the next test or exam.
