My lessons are structured, supportive and tailored to the individual student. I believe English is about more than learning techniques for an exam: it is about developing the confidence to express ideas, think critically and engage with texts independently. I therefore use a mixture of clear modelling, guided practice, discussion and independent work, adapting activities and explanations to suit each student’s needs and goals.
I have experience teaching English across KS3 and KS4, including Animal Farm, The Bone Sparrow and Tyger, as well as preparing students for GCSE English Language. I particularly enjoy helping students make connections between literature and the wider world, using contemporary examples, film, audio and other multimedia where they can make challenging ideas more accessible. My Film Studies background has also given me a strong understanding of visual storytelling and adaptation, which I enjoy bringing into lessons.
I place a strong emphasis on discussion. Students are encouraged to explain their interpretations, ask questions and build on ideas rather than simply searching for a ‘correct’ answer. For students who are less confident, I provide carefully scaffolded tasks, model responses and manageable steps towards independent work. I also have experience supporting students with low literacy and SEND through adapted resources and targeted interventions.
Above all, I aim to create a tutoring environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and taking intellectual risks. My goal is not only to improve grades, but to help students become more confident, capable and independent learners.
