I believe the best way to tutor students is to deeply understand their thought processes while tackling problems, and over time evolving their method into a consistent, reliable technique.
Confidence to ask for help and explain what you're struggling with in class was a key issue for me, so I want to ensure with my tutees that there is no shame in being stuck on an 'easy' topic and that questions can take as long as necessary to thoroughly understand them. Lessons will typically follow this structure:
- Listing out key topics which need extra support and explaining where the confusion lies - An overview/ lesson explaining these topics in a way which makes sense to the tutee - Past paper questions- analysis of repeated question terminology, deducing a step by step method of how to approach the question, solving the question together
As we continue sessions, students should feel more independent and confident in answering questions with less support from me.
I was a Physics Subject Captain in Sixth form and tutored GCSE students 2 times a week, I also attended maths help sessions in upper sixth to provide support for lower sixth students. My lessons are aimed for levels GCSE and below, however I am happy to tutor A-level students. Lessons will typically last around an hour.
In my opinion, a strong understanding in Maths and Physics is essential to boost logic, reasoning and a greater understanding of the world- as well as future career paths.
