I've been a chemistry teacher in Scottish secondary schools for 8 years and I'm fully registered with the GTCS. I teach pupils through National 5 and Higher, so I know what the exams ask for and where marks usually get lost. I also hold a BEng, an MSc and a PhD in chemical engineering, and I still work in industry alongside teaching. That means I know the subject well beyond the course and can show pupils where chemistry is actually used. I can usually explain why something happens, which is often when it finally clicks. I'm used to working with pupils who find chemistry hard. If your child is struggling or has lost confidence, we go back to the basics and build up from there at their pace. If they're doing well, I'll stretch them towards an A. Lessons are one to one and online. We start with whatever they're doing in class that week. I explain it, we do a few questions together, then they have a go on their own and I step in when needed. I use SQA past paper questions a lot, because it's the best way to learn how answers are marked. Nearer the exam we move on to full papers and timing. Most pupils get stuck in the same places: balancing equations, mole calculations, and writing answers that pick up all the marks. I go through these slowly and as many times as it takes. After each lesson I send practice questions, and parents are welcome to ask for an update at any time. I hold a Disclosure Scotland certificate. We can start with a trial lesson to see how it goes.
