I prefer a conversational approach to learning and centre lessons around a PowerPoint that we work through together, discussing the information on each slide. I encourage questions at any time as I believe reinforcing concepts or elaborating on complex topics at the moment of learning is the best way to paint a full picture of the concepts of biology. I have previous experience supervising the learning and laboratory activities of biology and biochemistry undergraduates and masters students and found that an initial explanation from me followed by discussion and application of the new information was the best way to make it stick in the mind. I also have found success with setting problems to solve and being available to answer questions as they come up, allowing students to apply their own understanding and realise the gaps in their own knowledge. This kind of self-evaluation gives confidence in the learner's own knowledge and improves their ability to think critically about problems within biology, making future tasks easier to tackle even in a new or unfamiliar topic. I am also open to discourse with a new learner about the way they learn best and am more than happy to accommodate any learning style.
