Lessons with me will be informal and discussion-based, in the style of mentor and mentee, rather than teacher and student. We can work through specific aspects of academic work that you find challenging, from understanding what content needs to go in each section of a scientific report to make it flow logically, to bringing together multiple research studies to form a 'synthesised' piece of writing, to crafting an effective and informative scientific or lay abstract. Whatever you need help with! There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and to discuss how the concepts raised might apply to a specific piece of work you are completing. Having marked many hundred pieces of assessment, I can help you avoid the common pitfalls that I have encountered in student work.

In addition to academic writing guidance, I also offer advice and support on CVs and cover letters, especially for undergraduate students, where you likely have limited direct experience of the role you are applying for. In this case, there is a greater need to extract relevant skills from seemingly-disconnected activities and experiences, and I can help you both to identify and articulate what these are. As a former Academic Lead for Employability and Careers, I have a great deal of experience in helping students to secure the role (undergraduate placement, further study, graduate job etc.) they really want.
