I have experience helping students in Year 8 with maths work and helping my peers during GCSE maths.
In tutoring sessions, I would choose a topic to do and get the students initial ideas on how to solve a question. I would then take the I do, We do, You do approach which allows the student to listen, ask questions if needed and have a go at the question themselves. I would set a few questions to answer independently before going through the answer and how the question would be marked. I also like to include analogies or metaphors that used to help me when learning as well as different acronyms for different aspects of maths in both KS3 and KS4.
For GCSE students, each session would include going through part of or all of a past paper for either Maths Paper 1, Maths Paper 2 or Maths Paper 3. These sessions would endure that every type of question is answered - taking questions from the front, middle and back of the paper to prioritise the different difficulty levels in each paper. I would also go through the mark scheme for each question and show the student what needs to be included in order to get working out marks. As sessions go on, I would be able to pinpoint how the student show spend their time in an exam to ensure that most if not all questions are answered to the best of their ability.
