All lessons will be tailored to suit the needs of the individual but all of them will be rooted in general pedagogy with a focus on looking at the topic through an academic lens. I am studying psychology at a university level and have provided academic support with secondary school English for over 3 years. Therefore, I am able to help you with tasks such as essay writing (english and psychological), creative writing, literature and language.
Our first session will be super relaxed, and mostly involves getting to know each other! We will explore what your long-term and short term goals are, what areas you are finding difficult and maybe assess where you are at currently. I might ask to see examples of where your current work or give you a task to complete during the session.
Once we know what we are working with I will create bespoke session plans based on your needs. Generally, sessions will begin with a check-in / retrieval / warm up activity before we go over the core learning materials of the session. This will be done at your own pace and with learning materials that actually help you learn!
We will have a main activity that will take up the bulk of the session which will entail supported but independent work that will help you practice what we have learned so far. These activities will also help me gauge the effectiveness of the session, and identify areas that might need more attention.
The session will usually end with feedback, a discussion or reflection and we will set the goals for the next session.
I am passionate about engagement with young people, parents or adults and so the process will be collaborative. If I am working with a young person, it might be that our first session involves the parents to get a better grasp of the situation - especially if the young person struggles to articulate what they need help with.
Homework is optional and I will always be able to provide you with ways to develop outside of the sessions, but this definitely isn’t required. If you have additional needs or find learning particularly difficult, that’s okay, and I am confident that I can help you.
