Eli Goings

I am a native English speaker, and have 4 years of tutoring in both 1-on-1 and classroom settings with both native English speakers and ESLs.

My TEFL training allows me to create a streamlined class experience when it is required, and my time as a dedicated tutor allows me to be flexible to the individual I am working with.

I strongly believe in being adaptable to students' needs and goals and will adjust my teaching accordingly. I have a strong background in grammar mechanics, but will not overemphasize these skills at the cost of fluency development unless the student is highly experienced. For students still developing fluency, I like to spend some time on idioms and contractions so that the students can become comfortable using English like native speakers. When they are more comfortable with English, I prefer to use open dialogue and conversational methods to develop quality writing and speaking skills to help students learn more complex formations. I have an ear for the subtleties of specific words, and can help students understand the connotations and associations of the words in their vocabulary, helping them be precise in their language when the situation calls for it.

I have 8 years of Latin experience and can help you with translating Roman poetry or prose, or simply developing your grammar and syntax skills. I have much experience with Roman historians, particularly Livy, Tacitus, and Ammianus Marcellinus. I also have some experience with later authors like the Venerable Bede.

I aim to have fun, digestible lessons that bring a love of language and all the nuances that it provides. I look forward to hearing from you!
