During my own exams, I was no stranger to private tutoring. One of the most valuable lessons I gained from those experiences was that a tutee-led approach is often the most effective way to identify an individual's strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into education, I believe it is important to avoid over-reliance on these tools and instead, ensure that students develop a strong, critical understanding of biological concepts through discussion, independent thinking, and practical application.
My aim is to help students build the fundamental skills that underpin scientific thinking, including critical analysis, problem-solving, and the ability to evaluate information independently. Rather than relying on the instant, spoon-fed answers that AI can provide, I encourage students to engage actively with the material and develop confidence in their own reasoning.
In these student-led sessions, we will use both long- and short-answer practice questions to identify areas of strength and those requiring further development. We will then focus on any topics that the student would like to explore in greater depth or feels they need additional support with. This tailored approach promotes a well-rounded understanding of the subject, complemented by past-paper practice, flashcards, active recall techniques, and periodic assessments.
