I have tutored languages to both adults and high school students in the past and what I find best is a mix of grammar and basic understanding of the language, and then applying that into real conversations.

I always start with a simple conversation to try to understand your current level of English and what knowledge you are missing.

Then, we move onto filling in the grammatical and vocabulary gaps in your knowledge by going through specific lessons to help you understand it more. E.g. short grammatical worksheets to improve grammar

And then the most important part, we apply it to conversations

And I always give a bit of homework so you don't forget what we learned!
