I have a PhD in sociology of education and ten years experience teaching at London Metropolitan University, London South Bank and Goldsmiths College, including lecturing and supporting students one-to-one. I have also supervised PhD students to successful completion including remotely online.
My approach to tutoring students in their academic studies is to encourage stream-of-consciousness writing with no judgement ('just do it'), which we then work together to edit; I support you to practice skim-reading for gist and key points; encourage you to write memos (short summaries) for each of the readings your do, so you build up a resource bank of materials to continuously draw on and avoid the feeling of information overload. I encourage and support you to focus on good habits including low-tech living/ regular social media switch-off, sleeping well and daily hours outdoors. These down times allow your brain and body to rest and recharge and enables knowledge processing, idea generation and free thought.
