I have several years worth of teaching, coaching and mentoring, having been employed as a demonstrator and study mentor at several academic institutions (London Metropolitan University and University of Hertfordshire). I hold a first class Hons degree in Biomedical Science BSc and am currently writing up my PhD thesis in the field of molecular microbiology. Along the way I have won several prizes, published original research in respectable peer reviewed journals and presented data at conferences.
I generally start mentorship with essential information regarding study methods and delineating the aims of the student. I then gradually tailor the style of teaching to the student as I learn about their personal approach to learning. This allows us both to get the most out of the time we put in, in an efficient manner.
Not only do I cover the necessary information to cover syllabus topics in an integrated fashion, but I also incorporate many productivity and memory techniques to help students with the large amoun of information they have to process. This ranges from playful mnemonics, colour coding, mind maps and memory palaces, depending on what works for the student. I find this to be not only helpful for the subject they need help with, but also supports their learning across the board in all subjects.
Additionally, I have excellent written style and can help students with their written assignments and coursework. Again, this support, incorporating attention to grammar, spelling and vocabulary, has great benefits beyond the remit of their biology work!
