As a creative practitioner, I strongly believe that languages should be taught through a combination of stimulating and engaging lessons, a positive and encouraging teaching presence, and the consistent use of target language to stretch learners. Some of my best lessons have been well-pitched for the range of abilities in my classroom, with appropriate challenge for all, alongside the inclusion of cultural knowledge, which has resulted in high levels of learner engagement. In lessons I am professional and remain positive and remind students learning languages is a journey that does come with bumps in the road, with mistakes a normal part of the journey and that without them there is no learning. I believe this optimistic and engaging approach helps maintain learner confidence and allows students to enjoy language lessons and remain motivated to learn, and this is one of my main aims as a language teacher.
Establishing these methods as routine creates stability, clear expectations and norms, and a strong and consistent learning environment, and I believe applying these methods to modern language teaching will give students the best opportunity to thrive and enjoy learning languages, which is especially important to me for German. Language learning not only enhances communication and professional skills but also enriches cultural knowledge and broadens students’ perspectives to the world beyond our own country. My goal is to motivate and engage students; I want them to enjoy the subject and recognise its relevance to their lives and future opportunities.
