Exciting because you do not know what exactly will happen during the session provide on the specific time. In certain instances, which I observe is that students are mostly in control of the time, which is correct. In ESL, students must have 80% of the conversation for them to practice and improve the confidence of speaking the language. And around 20% coming from the teacher who is the direct facilitator of the learning activities.
That’s why it Is Enjoyable part of my experience, because I need them to continue talking but often time, they are using their mother language which is Chinese Mandarin, and I have to let them stop without offending their feelings, and let them be reminded that we are still on a ESL class and the mother language is prohibited. Some students understand others don’t, its fine when you have a student at a higher grade because they understand, and they know the reason why they spare time for this lesson.
Challenging because you need to apply different strategies on different students and considered their ages and behavior towards the learning activities. Today the strategies implied where very effective, but you cannot say on the next session it will be used. I need to be complex and versatile towards my application. Students easily get bored when it comes to repetition of methods and strategies of teaching. Once boredom hits the target, it is difficult to reconnect again, so right from the Start until the end of the session, the elements of surprises shall be at your disposal so that the attention and focus are intact. And students are eager to attend classes on the following days.
