Having learnt Spanish for 7 years and having obtained a 9 in GCSE and an A* at A level, as well as now studying Spanish (alongside politics) at Bristol university, my standard is now at a stage where I am able to teach at a high proficiency.
My qualification as TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) teacher means I have a solid foundation in teaching, and my six months’ experience teaching English online taught me a lot. This foundation led me to happily accept the role when a family friend asked me to teach their daughter GCSE Spanish.
I am currently teaching one student at a fairly high standard for GCSE, considering her aim is to get from a 7 to a 9. I thoroughly enjoy both planning the lessons and teaching them, and realised I could use my developing skill set to teach on a more frequent basis.
My lessons are very interactive - I have a focus on active recall (i.e. testing on grammar and vocabulary learnt the week before), and then tend to mix the more mundane elements (grammar grammar grammar! it's boring but so very important!) with the fun parts - interactive speaking sections, learning vocabulary through songs and videos, and so much more.
My lessons so far have been very exam-centred - for GCSE students I like to show them the mark scheme (after all, there's no point treating you like a child if you're 16) and then talk through how we can reach those top bands in a targeted and practical manner. Of course, if you're learning for fun I will take a more relaxed and fluid approach.
