In our lessons, I'll ask you about your learning goals and interests, and tailor the lessons around what you would like to achieve and learn about. I offer 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons. You can pick whichever you feel will work best for you. For music theory, I find 30 or 45 minute lessons allow students to stay focused and get the most out of their lesson. For composition, I find that 45 to 60 minute lessons work well, as they tend to be a bit more exploratory. It's completely up to you though!
For composition students, I will also ask you what kind of input you would like from me. Showing your music to someone else can be scary (it still is for me, after 15 years of doing this professionally). Some students prefer detailed, nitty-gritty feedback, and others prefer to talk about their work more broadly and use the lesson as a sounding board. I'm happy to provide whatever kind of input is most useful, and feels comfortable to you.
I've taught at schools, conservatoire and university. I have a teaching degree, a Master in Musicology: Communication and Education, and a Bachelor and PgDip in Composition. I'm also finishing a PhD in Composition. As a composer, I've written for Dutch National Opera, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, RSNO, BBC NOW, Concertgebouworkest Young, and LPO. I'm happy to teach at any level from age 8 upwards.
