I plan my lessons in advance and thoroughly to make sure I cover the topics that the students don’t understand. I always ask the students beforehand, what is it that they struggle with and I plan the lesson accordingly. I always start the lesson by recapping previous lessons with a 5 minute starter. This helps the student to actively recall basic facts and generally to get their brain warmed up and ready for the lesson. I go through the answers and note down the ones the student got wrong. I understand that it can be hard to like biology, as it’s a heavy content subject with very challenging exam questions. So, I condense detailed concepts of biology into simple notes to make it easier for students to understand. Showing them with diagrams and videos help students to grasp the concept and to develop a stronger interest for biology is important too. Throughout the lesson, I ask questions to see how well they have understood and whether they have been paying attention. After they are fully confident with the topic, I give students a chance to apply their knowledge with hard exam styles questions. So that they can practice and further extend their knowledge and experiences with biology. I also make sure the lessons are engaging so that they are able to pay attention throughout the whole lesson. I have used these techniques with a range of GCSE students who has improved strongly over many lessons. It’s a great experience for me too, to watch students progress quickly and to get the results they deserve.
