I tend to start by talking to pupils, understanding their approach to their art and what motivates them, and what they want to achieve. I then look at work they have completed to date and begin to understand where they are in their development. From that point on I work out a basic strategy and timetable that will meet their needs and hopefully encourage them to develop their knowledge and skills beyond their initial ideas. Depending on the requirement, I can create a series of lesson plans that work alongside a more formal approach such as GCSE, or a more flexible process that can explore the individuals ideas and thoughts. While I do believe in having high expectations, this is not at the expense of enjoying the lesson or developing skills. I have a very wide experience of Graphic Design having worked as an industry professional for over 25 years, but I also have skills and knowledge relating to more traditional art i.e. Watercolour, Acrylic, Gouache, Pen & Ink, Pencil and general drawing, including figure studies and landscape. To me, art is about exploring creativity, breaking down fears and unlocking potential. Exploring and discussing art is also a great way to improve analytical thinking, expression and communication. I also think that creating not only improves your mind but lifts the spirits and instils a sense of well being and confidence.
