There is no single way to describe my teaching style, as every lesson is tailored to the needs, strengths, and interests of the individual student. I begin by identifying what a pupil already knows and where misconceptions may lie, allowing me to build learning from a secure foundation.

Where appropriate, I use manipulatives, visual representations, and concrete examples to make abstract concepts more accessible. For example, in mathematics I may use physical resources or pictorial models to support understanding before moving to more formal methods. In literacy, I often break down complex texts into manageable sections and model reading and writing strategies before encouraging pupils to apply them independently. I am particularly passionate about encouraging students to read and write for pleasure, and as such, I encourage children to share what they have written and what they are reading in my sessions!

In my experience, the most effective learning is rooted in meaningful experiences and real-world connections. I therefore seek to make lessons relatable by linking new concepts to a pupil's interests and everyday life. This not only improves understanding but also helps students see the value and relevance of what they are learning.

I place a strong emphasis on questioning and discussion, encouraging pupils to explain their thinking rather than simply provide answers. This helps me assess understanding in real time while developing confidence, reasoning skills, and independent thought. Above all, I aim to create a supportive environment in which students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and challenging themselves academically. For older pupils, I use my experience of Oxford tutorials to academically challenge and push students - helping students prepare for a strong academic life!
