I have a Masters degree in Theoretical Physics and have undertaken voluntary Maths tutoring through charity Action Tutoring. I appreciate using the creative materials that many people have made to learn and practice the subject.
I have worked within IT, Finance and Administration and have undertaken a one-year voluntary internship with a charity, helping to organise activities and cafes for international students.
Voluntary Maths tutoring has provided me with a better understanding of the mathematics curriculum, ideas of resources to use, sharing of ideas and a framework for lesson planning. This included longer-term tutoring with Year 6 students (13 sessions and 19 sessions), shorter-term tutoring with Year 11 students (between 3 to 6 sessions) and occasional cover sessions with Year 5 students.
I found the Action Tutoring lesson plan helpful, which includes a game/ice-breaker activity, a warm-up such as Arithmetic practice, a recap of the previous topic, time to discuss a new topic with a combination of worked examples and opportunity for own practice, student review and short game. This can be flexible depending on the time available and preferences.
Action Tutoring usually undertake a diagnostic test prior to tutoring to identify areas of Maths that might be best to focus on. I would be happy to talk to students about the different topic areas and identify areas they would like to practice.
In my spare time, I enjoy walking, Artwork such as watercolour painting and attending church activities.
I look forward to speaking to you and to discuss possible tutoring.
