Every lesson is tailored to the individual student, their learning style, and their goals. Whether you're building confidence, improving essay writing, preparing for exams, or aiming for a top university, I'll create a structured learning plan focused on steady, measurable progress. We'll review this plan regularly so you can clearly track your development, celebrate milestones, and identify the next areas for improvement.
Lessons are interactive and discussion-based, encouraging students to think critically rather than simply memorise content. Together, we analyse texts in depth, develop sophisticated interpretations, refine analytical writing, and practise the skills required to excel in examinations. I place particular emphasis on helping students write clearly, confidently, and with precision. These skills are invaluable not only in exams, but throughout higher education and beyond. Rather than focusing solely on covering the curriculum, I take a holistic approach that nurtures intellectual curiosity, creativity, and independent thought. I want students to feel confident questioning ideas, making connections across texts and contexts, and developing their own informed perspectives.
For GCSE, IGCSE, and A Level students, lessons typically combine close textual analysis with explicit teaching of exam technique, essay planning, and regular practice using past papers and mark schemes. Sessions are largely student-led, allowing us to spend more time on areas that students find challenging while building confidence in their existing strengths. I also provide detailed written feedback and, where appropriate, optional tasks between lessons to reinforce learning without becoming overwhelming.
For university applicants, I offer tailored support with admissions tests, personal statements, written work, and Oxbridge interview preparation. Drawing on my own academic training, I help students develop the analytical depth, confidence, and intellectual curiosity that competitive universities look for. I also work with undergraduate and postgraduate students on academic writing, providing detailed feedback on essays and dissertations, with support ranging from planning and structure to argument development, referencing, and academic style.
Above all, I strive to create a friendly, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and challenging themselves. My lessons are rigorous but relaxed. English should be both intellectually stimulating and genuinely enjoyable. Ultimately, my goal is not only to improve grades, but to help students become more confident readers, clearer writers, and more independent thinkers. We will build skills that will benefit you long after exams or admissions cycles are over.
