My current role as Associate Professor of Anatomy was achieved after 18 years’ experience of teaching human anatomy to medical, dental and allied healthcare professionals.
My teaching methods involved lectures to large groups and discussions, tutorials and problem based learning with small groups. The COVID era heralded experience with virtual classrooms using various digital platforms. This involves a series of slides or powerpoint presentations with diagrams to explain the subject, as anatomy is largely learnt via visualisation.
The assessment methods include formulation and implementation of multiple choice questions, oral structured practical exams (OSPE), supervision of student delivered presentations and record keeping. This will be interspersed with the teaching, as anatomy is a volatile subject and has to be refreshed continually.
Interacting with first year medical students and engaging with their fresh and keen minds has always been a pleasure. My role as mentor provided me great joy by contributing towards the emotional and mental well-being of my students.
I feel every student should have the opportunity to learn through curiosity, at their own pace with a hands-on approach.
