Currently, I am about to head into my second year of medicine, so having sat A Levels recently, I can understand the challenges exams bring, where it may not be knowledge but application. My approach is built around each student's weaknesses rather than a fixed script. I start by diagnosing where marks are actually being lost — through past papers, mark schemes, and getting the student to explain their thinking — and then target our time on exactly those gaps. There's a difference between not knowing the content, not being able to apply it, and losing easy marks on technique, with each one needing a different fix. I will ensure that sessions cover key material the student struggles with and my aim will be to supplement understanding with knowledge, giving them the ability to tackle every style of question. I will make sure lessons are interactive and ensure any content taught is helped with questions, and also give key revision resources. Lessons will be clear, relevant to the exam board and will involve different ways of retrieving knowledge.
By my own experience, I have first hand seen what works and what doesn't, and how the quality of revision is just as if not more important than quantity, so I will also work with the student through revision techniques to find what works, whether it be flash cards, blurting, questions or a culmination, the end goal will be for goals to be met. I can also help with medical school applications and give lessons for aspects of this e.g. UCAT and Interviews, as well as biology chemistry and maths.
