I have come to realise that regardless of your style, there are some commonalities to good law teachers, Both in terms of substance and form, which whilst not a panacea for a successful teaching / learning experience, will hopefully be helpful to anyone teaching law.

Firstly is to contextualise so for example court cases, political and social circumstances are useful to explain the law, and allowing students to personally relate to it.

Secondly, to use your own experiences. I do not have any previous experience on tutoring but having being tutored myself and not getting the help i required is a personal experience that will help exemplify, or improve the understanding of, how certain points of law work.

Thirdly, by knowing about the law by doing latest research, the latest cases. So good teaching is ideally research-lead teaching.

Fourthly, I would say to be generous with your time. Most academics are very busy, so time is (increasingly) precious, but making an effort to answer students and being available to them is crucial for both the learning, and the teaching, experience.

Fifth, is to be kind and caring, treat students the way you would have liked to be treated yourself and even if you weren’t, give the students that caring platform amd respect.

Lastly, to have development skills. Students’ attention-span is short, so tone of voice body movement are crucial. So being expressive will help get the attention more of my students, and help connect more.

Being friendly, a good listener and supportive is my way of teaching.
