I have previously tutored students aged 11-18 years in Maths across a variety of abilities and backgrounds for over two years.
My usual approach is to give weekly, or twice-weekly, lessons to students over the course of 5-10 weeks. This has proven to work really well in building relationships and trust with students, who quickly become comfortable in asking questions and making mistakes - which combines to make for a great learning experience.
My sessions are always interactive and engaging, and aim to improve critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as resilience and exam technique. My lessons typically start with some introductory questions to gauge a students comfort in a particular topic. Before tailoring the rest of the lesson, and subsequent lessons, in order to stretch the student. I always look to get the student to have a go at answering questions, and try to avoid too much lecturing on my part, as I believe that trying is the best way of learning.
I typically end a topic by asking students to teach the topic we have covered back to me, as if students can coherently explain a theme it is a great sign that they have properly understood a topic.
