My approach starts with the student rather than the syllabus. Before anything else, I want to understand how a child learns, what they find difficult, where their confidence sits and what motivates them. From there, I tailor sessions to suit their individual needs, whether that means going back to basics, filling specific gaps or pushing ahead of their year group, communicating regularly with parents to keep them informed of progress.
I believe that genuine understanding is always more valuable than rote repetition, so I focus on helping students build real comprehension of a topic rather than simply learning to answer a particular question. This tends to pay off not just in exams but in long-term confidence and curiosity.
For younger students or those who have struggled, I place a particular emphasis on creating a relaxed and encouraging environment. Progress is rarely linear, and I try to make sure students feel supported when things are difficult and celebrated when things click.
