Biology can seem overwhelming when it is taught as a collection of facts that simply need to be memorised. My approach is different: I want my students to understand why and how things happen, because once biology makes sense, it becomes much easier to remember. I have a degree in Genetics and I am currently studying Medicine, giving me a strong background across biology, genetics, molecular biology and human biology. I particularly enjoy taking complicated topics and breaking them down into simple, logical concepts that students can connect together.
One of the main tools I use in my lessons is mind mapping. I create clear visual connections between concepts, processes and key information so that students can see the bigger picture rather than trying to memorise isolated facts. We build topics step by step, constantly connecting new information to things the student already understands. My goal is to help students create a mental framework that makes information easier to understand, recall and retain long term.
Lessons are adapted to each student’s level, goals and learning style. We can work through difficult topics, revise material from school or university, prepare for examinations, practise questions, or focus on areas where the student feels less confident.
I also encourage students to ask why rather than simply accepting information. Biology becomes much more interesting, and much easier, when you understand the mechanisms behind it.
My aim is not just to help students pass their next exam. I want them to develop a genuine understanding of biology and learn how to organise complex information in a way that they can remember and apply in the future.
