I believe in communicative approach as a way to really reach the goal of becoming a profficient English speaker.
My lessons have a highly focused communicative objective and that is why I include topics of interest in every lesson that encourage students to give their opinions and feel confident when doing so. For sure, speaking a language also requires mastering grammar structures. Therefore, I have managed to find engaging teaching resources to teach grammar, such as games, readings, and videos for students not to feel overwhelmed when trying to understand the math behind the language.
In my lesson, students will feel welcomed and valued since after going through the process of language learning myself, I know from experience how scary and nerve wracking it can be. I always encourage learners to make mistakes their best allies and this has worked for my students to gain more confidence and start practicing their skill leaving fear and anxiety behind.
The structure of my lessons is pretty straight-forward. I focus on the needs of my students and design my lessons based on their communicative goals.
I start with a fun warm-up activity in order to foster vocabulary building. Then continue explaining the objective of the class and the activities we are to carry out in order to reach the goal of the lesson. Afterwards, I present the topic of the class using different resources, such as realia and authentic materials and then start with the practice part where students are expected to develop grammar exercises in order to check their comprehension of the grammar structure studied. Then I like developing a discussion part where students are welcome to share opinions and use the structures they learnt. After that, they are encouraged to develop an activity on their own showing how relevant the content of the lesson was. I close up my lessons by asking for suggestions in order to improve my delivery as a teacher as knowing my students' opinion is extremely helpful for becoming better by the day.
