My key aim as a tutor is to instill a strong foundational understanding of the topic at hand. This involves beginning with breaking down concepts to their simplest level before building up these understandings into a wider picture. To achieve this, first we will discuss the topic in depth using presentations and diagrams and relate it to the existing knowledge of student. Then reinforcing this understanding through presentation of problems to be answered. I believe students learn best when allowed to work through problems at their own pace with guidance and allow them to make mistakes without immediately jumping in, only correcting any errors once they have worked through their thinking. Of course every student is different and my approach will be moderated to suit the needs of each student. Myself and the student will have plenty of conversations about what structure and approach works for them.

I have been involved in some form of teaching for most of my life. I am currently a sports team coach for a local university team and I was a demonstrator and supervisor for undergraduate students over the course of my PhD and postdoctoral work. As well as this, I was a student mentor whilst at school. This opened my eyes to the needs of students and how much they benefit from being given room to work things out for themselves and make mistakes.

My knowledge of chemistry is well established having worked at the forefront of the field for a number of years and I remember the needs of undergraduate courses well. I also studied biology, physics and maths at A-level and throughout the earlier parts of my undergraduate studies meaning I have a strong understanding of these fields.
