Hello! My name is Andy, I am a freelance illustrator and my work mainly focuses on drawing. I am based in Falmouth, but am also able to teach online.
My lessons would explore observational art — not just as a skill, but as a personal language. Observational drawing is often thought of as simply “drawing what you see,” but it’s so much more. It’s about noticing details others might miss, experimenting with how you record them, and letting your own perspective shine through. This can lead to creating your own unique style (although this does not mean a style lasts forever!)
We’ll start by looking at examples of observational drawings in different styles — from precise, detailed realism to loose, expressive sketches. This will show how artists use the same subject, yet create completely unique results.
Next, we’ll experiment ourselves. Using the tools available — whether pencil, charcoal, ink, or digital — we’ll explore different approaches to the same subject. We’ll play with proportion, perspective, and line quality, discovering how a small shift in style can completely change the feeling of a drawing.
Most importantly, I want you to see drawing as expansive and deeply personal. Technique is important, but it’s your individual voice — the way you see, interpret, and express — that brings a drawing to life. By the end of this session, you’ll have not just a collection of drawings, but a better sense of how your own perspective shapes your art.
