My goal as an English language and literature tutor is to impart not only knowledge but confidence and enjoyment in the subject and our sessions!

I am flexible depending on whether the student has specific needs they want to focus on or would prefer a more general study of of the curriculum, but mainly focusing on testing comprehension and writing. Here is a general overview on the type of content I usually cover:

KS1 (Year 1-2) : Mainly phonics, developing the tools to read confidently, and beginner reading comprehension. For example, reading a short story together and encouraging them to figure out words by themselves using both phonics and visual cues from the illustrations.

KS2 (Year 3-6): SPaG (Spelling, grammar, punctuation). I would encourage them to explore writing different style texts, such as poetry, etc and work on developing reading comprehension. I also try to develop creativity by using fun tools such as games and story cubes to help them form short stories using their imagination.

KS3 (Year 7-9): I would focus on reading and writing skills. For reading comprehension I might set tasks such as writing a book review, or looking at texts together and discussing authorial intention by questioning why choices were made to help them with the beginning skills of literacy analysis. We could also look at the differences between fiction and non fiction.

KS4 and 5 (Year 10-13): I can teach both English language and English literature GCSE and A level. It would involve covering content, using past papers, and looking at exam strategies such as time management.

I charge at £20/hour for KS1-3, £30 for KS4-5.
