I start with warm ups (basic scales, arpeggios, contrary motion scales etc.), which are essential for building a solid foundation in practicing the piano, before moving onto the piano pieces.
Piano scores will be broken down into sections so that I can target the specific weak areas of the student. Each week, we will work on perfecting the different sections and gradually put them together over time until the student is confident playing the full piece all the way through. Some foundational areas that I will work on include playing the right notes and getting the right rhythm and counts. For intermediate students, I will also work on performance expression and direction such as articulation and dynamics. If required for the piece, we will also work on pedal work to ensure smooth incorporation of the relevant techniques to bring the piece to life.

My previous teaching experience was teaching Grade 1 ABRSM Piano during my gap year between A levels and University, where I developed the student’s weak foundation in sight reading and counting. Within 4 months, I had the student jump from a shaky foundation in Grade 1 pieces to playing Grade 2 pieces in full. During lessons, I also take notes for the student’s reference, highlighting the relevant sections in the piano pieces for them to focus on during their self-practice. If the student requires clarification, I am more than happy for them to contact me outside of lesson time on WhatsApp/sending practice videos during the week.
