I believe that the best way to learn is through an assessment of verbal communication! While communicating in another language is difficult in the earlier stages of learning, it is an amazing way to assess your progress over time. I also believe that really understanding the basics is the best way to build on our knowledge; because without that strong foundation it is nearly impossible to build on new things that we will learn. I find that the best way for a student to learn is to keep the topics that we discuss relevant to the student's interests, while building on more practical day to day words and phrases that are needed to successful have a conversation in a foreign language. Smaller activities will be interrupted by short quizzes to assess the areas that need to be reiterated or to highlight points of confusion.
One of my favorite things about every language is the depth of culture attached to it and this can best be seen through small written passages and short films that we would go over and analyze. Of course, the depth of analysis and the type of content that we would look at depends on the level of knowledge the student would have, but regardless of the level learning through these methods is the best way to truly absorb information! I truly believe that catering to the students type of learning is the best way for both student and teacher to get the best out of a tutoring session.
