I am an MMath Mathematics graduate from the University of York and will soon be beginning a PhD. I have studied a wide range of mathematics, from algebra, calculus and statistics to more advanced topics such as numerical analysis, topology and abstract algebra. Over the past three years, I have also helped tutor family members and friends, supporting them with homework, exam preparation and difficult mathematical concepts.
My lessons are friendly, structured and adapted to the individual student. At the beginning, I identify the topics the student finds most challenging and discuss their goals, whether that is improving confidence, preparing for an upcoming exam or aiming for a higher grade. I then explain each concept clearly and step by step, using examples before encouraging the student to attempt similar questions independently.
I believe mathematics is best learned through active problem-solving rather than simply watching someone complete questions. During lessons, I regularly ask students to explain their reasoning, as this helps reveal misunderstandings and develops the ability to approach unfamiliar problems confidently. I also focus on exam technique, including how to interpret questions, show working clearly, avoid common mistakes and manage time effectively.
Lessons can include a mixture of topic explanations, guided examples, practice questions, past-paper problems and feedback on schoolwork. I am patient and happy to explain an idea in several different ways until it makes sense. My aim is to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and gradually becoming more independent and confident in mathematics.
