Throughout my career I have had trainees, normally oil company staff, whose competence in their specialism (normally geological) is undisputed. but their understanding of physics and/ or engineering concepts stopped at their elective education (various countries typically age 14~15) so I have had to teach them how the machines they are working with actually work, and how to turn raw measurements into geologically meaningful interpretations. Which isn't part of geological training, because it's the sort of thing you learn as part of a PhD, for the particular equipment you're using, but not other equipment. Equipment rental companies are very happy about this, because it means that you don't notice. for example, days out-of-calibration which are bulled at "at ready" rate, and not at (lower) "standby" rate.
In the physical sciences, I am good at bringing concepts to life, and helping people to get their understanding from rote learning from books, to actually understanding the systems involved, and how to use them.
Generally, I need to assess a student's understanding of the material by asking them questions, and to find out the level they desire to reach (which might mean "past papers" if an examination certificate is their desired outcome). Then I will create (or combine from pre-existing materials) notebooks of both data and calculation methods, along with "homework" data sets aimed to improve their understanding, and to be assessed in seminar-like online meetings between us. Materials will be delivered, as appropriate, as editable PDFs, ODT or ODS (Open Office, text or spreadsheet) documents, or other formats as appropriate.
