Teaching Mathematics in Junior and Senior Secondary Schools
In my teaching practice, I currently teach mathematics to both junior secondary and senior secondary school students. Teaching mathematics at these levels is very important because it helps students develop logical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that are useful in their academic studies and daily life.
At the junior secondary level, I focus on helping students understand the basic foundations of mathematics. I teach topics such as basic arithmetic operations, fractions, algebraic expressions, simple equations, geometry, and basic statistics. At this stage, my goal is to ensure that students clearly understand the fundamental concepts because these concepts form the foundation for more advanced topics in senior secondary mathematics. I encourage students to ask questions and participate actively so that they can build confidence in solving mathematical problems.
At the senior secondary level, the mathematics topics become more advanced and abstract. I teach areas such as trigonometry, algebra, probability, coordinate geometry, and introductory calculus. While teaching these topics, I try to relate mathematical concepts to real-life situations so that students can understand the practical importance of mathematics in science, technology, engineering, and everyday decision-making.
The teaching method I currently apply is mainly the student-centered and activity-based teaching method. Instead of relying only on lectures, I engage students in class discussions, problem-solving activities, and group work. I also use examples, demonstrations, and practical exercises to help students understand the concepts better.
By applying this method, students become more involved in the learning process, which improves their understanding, confidence, and overall performance in mathematics.
