My lessons are structured around understanding each student’s individual strengths, weaknesses and learning needs. We’ll identify the topics and question types they are confident with, where they struggle, and how comfortable they are working under exam time pressure. This allows me to set targeted work that addresses weaker areas while continuing to refine their strengths.
I use a range of revision approaches depending on the student and the material, including active recall, spaced practice, interleaving, exam-question practice and learning from mistakes.
At the start of each lesson, we’ll briefly introduce the topic before revisiting the core principles that underpin it. Where new ideas are introduced, I’ll connect them to concepts the student has already learned, using what they know to build towards and derive the new material wherever possible. We’ll then explore the topic collaboratively, with me providing guidance and asking questions to help the student develop their understanding rather than simply giving them the answers.
Once the key ideas are established, we’ll work through challenging but accessible problems that are rewarding to engage with. These provide an opportunity to apply the concepts, identify any remaining gaps and naturally progress into the next part of the topic or onto new material.
Progress will be evaluated continuously. I’ll keep track of strengths, weaknesses, recurring mistakes, confidence with different question types, accuracy and performance under time pressure. We’ll regularly revisit previously difficult material and use exam-style and timed questions to see whether the student can apply what they have learned independently, including in unfamiliar situations. Lessons and independent work will then be adapted based on this progress.
The aim is to develop not only stronger exam performance, but genuine understanding, confidence and the ability to tackle problems independently.
