I like to touch basics first with all my students to get a good idea of their mathematical understanding - and plan my lessons accordingly.
For example: If you're a sixth standard student, I will test your arithmetic, basic algebra and fractions, and then proceed after understanding which arenas do you need more help in, and what are your strengths.
