Hello!
I have tutored the French Revolution at A Level so I am more than happy to provide you with a summary of what it was. It is a very complicated period of history which is difficult to summarise to a couple of sentences because of the amount of events there were and the amount of individuals involved in it.
The key points you need to know are the following:
- King Louis XVI (along with his wife Marie Antoinette) ruled France under a system known as the Ancien Regime: Louis ruled with absolutism, meaning that he believed that he was selected by God to rule over the French and tried to control every aspect of the political system
- People lived under a sort of feudal system called Estates, where those who had the most amount of power and influence faired better in society compared to those in the lower Third Estate (which made up around 97% of the population).
- The French population were inspired by Enlightenment philosophy which empowered them to take back control from the elites, as well as being inspired by the American Revolution which made Britain lose its grip on the Thirteen Colonies.
- Many political clubs began forming at first as underground rings but then later became more mainstream - they were responsible for spreading revolutionary ideas across France.
- Louis' government attempted many different reforms to try and appease the revolutionaries but failed every single time as it was assumed that Louis was still trying to hold onto his power.
- Eventually, the French Revolution developed over time with multiple uprisings, protests and many failed attempts at reform. These will have to be looked into quite a bit because the details are very important and they are quite difficult to summarise.
I hope this helps as a starting point :)
