Many seem to be skipping this question because the answer is A LOT! Here's the basic answer though. There are 12 pitches in the musical alphabet you can build a chord from: A,A#,B,C,C#,D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#. Each of these have a Major, minor, and diminished chord. That's 3 chords x 12 pitches = 26 basic chords that will let you play along with most songs. Anything beyond these involves adding new notes on top of those chords, or building your own from scratch.
