Can anyone recommend a city to visit for a long stay in France?

I´d like to spend a month or 2 in France to immerse myself more in the language. I´d ideally like to go to a city where there´s other young people, but I think Paris is a bit too big and too expensive for me. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!!

Hi Shahab, why don't you try Montpellier. It's a student city, really lively and friendly, with a lot of people going to study French there. Plus it's in the South so the weather is great.

Hi Shahab Look into Lyon - its a beautiful city with lots of history. Plus, if you like food, it's the gastronomical centre of France! If you want to go for Xmas, its amazing! The Festival of Lights is on 8th December and gets better every year.

Nîmes.....lol! However, avoid cities with lots of international students studying French....you will end up speaking English and not practicing your French.

A lovely, sunny and with a University in the south of France is Aix-en-Provence. It's not so expensive and with plenty of students who go to its University. Another little city further north with the Université Catholique de l'Ouest is Angers, very quiet in the evening. Another bigger city in the south of France is Perpignan, near the Spanish border, with the Pyrénées mountain as a border amd you are not far from Barcelona if you want to go for a week end to Spain.

Hi Shahab, Grenoble is very nice city to live in between mountains and is full of young and international students that comes there for their studies. Same as Lyon which is close by. If you like sea side, there's Marseille or Aix en Provence with very nice cities and villages around to visit and immerse yourself in the french culture. Toulouse is a big city with students as well, full of life, same as Bordeaux! You can find cheap accomodation with "Le Crous" if you come as a student. Best

Lyon is an excellent choice for a long stay. Known as France’s culinary capital, it offers a vibrant cultural scene, beautiful architecture, and a slower pace compared to Paris. Lyon is also well-located, with easy access to both the Alps and Provence, making it perfect for exploring different regions of France.

Hi, I would have to say that Bordeaux is a very lively and popular city with a lots of things to do and it is a city with a lot of culture. Nevertheless it might be a bit expensive, less than Paris without a doubt but still… I studied in Angers which a great place and is in the first place in the « city where it is good to live » ranking. It is an amazing city with a lot of students, very cute, safe and not far from Nantes or Brittany :)

I would suggest Montpellier. It's a very charming city. It has a large student population. Many very modern cultural and sports facilities. People in general are very calm and nice. Public transportation is great; it even takes you to the sea, 10 km from the city center. The city is a very good mix of old stones and modern life and building. You will love it.
