How can I help my child prepare for the SATs

When preparing for SATs we tend to focus on the obvious test taking skills. I think that as well as this we have to remember two other points:-

Firstly, learning is a social activity. Therefore, give your child oppoortunities to discuss what they know. Perhaps they can have time to share their learning with peers who are doing the same tests. They can support one another. Otherwise, it's a good idea to give the child an opportunity to teach younger ones what they know. This makes them feel good about what they're learning. It develops pride and confidence. It could be that your child know about things that you don't actually remember much about. Could they teach you something? Keep in mind that they best way of internalizing learning is to teach it to someone else.

A second point to keep in mind when preparing for SATs is to learn some focus techniques. Most of us, not only children, could make use of some guidance in how to focus. This somehting we keep telling our children to do, but we don't actually give them much guidance in actually how to focus on something. This is something that is hard to do in a classroom with a whole class, but as a parent at home you are able to do some exercises in this together with your child. Look online for mindfulness exercises, they are good for learning to focus, and this goes hand in hand with controlling our thoughts. Often test seasons cause children to feel worried. Mindfulness exercises can reduce some of that anxiety.
