It is important to know what base knowledge the learner has (assess), and what the target learning objectives are (targets), so that each sub-module or topic can build on each another to finally reach the goals that have been set. each learner will tend to respond better to certain techniques for retrieval and practise, so it is important to understand that each learner is an individual when planning learning materials.
