We will explore different media and approaches related to contemporary fine art practice. I approach lessons as a progression of building blocks that are engaging and inventive. Drawing would be a starting point, looking at different themes, and in context with art from around the world. Underpinned by drawings in various media, ideas develop, and I encourage sketchbook work, building skills/techniques, experimenting, leading eventually to final piece/es. Techniques along the way may include: collage, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture.
I encourage individual responses and use of eco-friendly materials, aligned with my own eco-art bias. My approach is enthusiastic, nurturing, inspiring. I dedicate preparation time to ensure high standards, the best opportunities and outcomes. I hold a current DBS. I understand the necessity for clear H&S, respect equality and safeguarding.
I am a practising artist, educator and curator. I have a PGCE (’94) and over 30 years’ experience teaching and working with the wider community on art projects. I have taught art in schools (primary to 6th form, full-time for 5 years, part-time for 18), universities, colleges, and online. I also run workshops and courses for young people, families and adult groups of all abilities . These include a whole spectrum of visual arts.
In my own practice, I exhibit extensively, work to commission, collaborate and curate large-scale art projects involving a wide community demographic. My art spans sculpture, drawing, installation and textiles using mixed media, mainly found and recycled materials.
I have an MFA, Bath Spa University and MRSS. I was an Ingram Prize ’21 finalist, recipient of a Royal Society of Sculptors Gilbert Bayes Award ’19, and received the Red Line Art Works Award ’20 for environmental installations.
